In November 2023 the USDA released its first update in eleven years, and the revision was significant: about half of the country shifted to a warmer half-zone. The new map draws on data from 13,412 weather stations — up from 7,983 in the 2012 version — using readings from 1991 through 2020, so it's both finer-grained and more current.
Across the map the average minimum temperatures rose by roughly 2.5°F, which is what nudged so many areas up a half-zone. The 2023 edition also added zones 12 and 13 for the warmest U.S. regions. And don't forget the microclimate in your own yard. A south-facing wall, a low frost-pocket hollow, or a sheltered courtyard can run a half-zone warmer or colder than the regional map says. I've overwintered plants against a warm brick wall that the map insists shouldn't survive my zone — and lost "hardy" plants in a cold low corner thirty feet away. The map gets you in the right neighborhood; your own observation does the rest.
How I actually use my zone, in practice: it's the gatekeeper at the nursery.
