The short version
True pines (Pinus) are the evergreens whose needles grow in bundles of 2, 3, or 5 held in a papery sheath — the fastest way to tell a pine from a spruce or fir. White pines carry 5 needles per bundle (5 letters in “white”); most red and hard pines carry 2 or 3. They range from 100-foot forest giants like eastern white pine and ponderosa to shrubby dwarfs like mugo pine that fit a foundation bed.
