Yellow Flowers: Lunaire's Field-Tested Picks

Twelve yellow flowers I have actually grown in zone 7b clay, with the exact cultivars that carried the color all season.

The short version

For dependable yellow from spring to frost in most of the country, you want a backbone of Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm', threadleaf coreopsis 'Zagreb', and a daylily like 'Stella de Oro', then daffodils for the early window. Most of the picks below are hardy in USDA zones 4–9, take full sun, and shrug off my heavy clay once established. I have grown every one of them in zone 7b, and these are the ones that actually held their color without flopping or fading by August.

How we chose

This isn't a list I assembled from other people's lists. Every plant here has gone in the ground in my own clay-heavy 7b garden, and I kept the ones that earned their place over at least two winters and two summers of full sun. Where I name a cultivar, it's the one I actually planted and watched bloom—not the showiest catalog photo. If something is fussy or slow its first year, I say so.

1. Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida)

Zones 4–9 · Full sun · Midsummer to fall. This is the workhorse of any yellow bed. I plant Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm' for its tight 24-inch habit and golden petals around a dark cone—it holds upright through clay and storms where the taller species flop. It blooms from July clear into October here and self-sows just enough to fill gaps without taking over. Cut it back hard in late fall or leave the seed heads for the goldfinches.

2. Threadleaf Coreopsis (Coreopsis verticillata)

Zones 4–9 · Full sun · Early summer to frost. For a low, airy mound of clear yellow, 'Zagreb' is the one I trust—it tops out around 18 inches, takes drought once rooted, and reblooms for months if I shear it after the first flush. The threadleaf foliage gives a soft texture that the daisy-shaped Rudbeckias don't. It's slow to wake in spring, so don't panic if it's the last thing up.

3. Daylily (Hemerocallis)

Zones 3–9 · Full sun to part shade · Early to midsummer, reblooming. 'Stella de Oro' is the rebloomer I put where I need golden-yellow with zero fuss—it's a foot tall and flowers in waves from June into fall. The clay doesn't bother it at all.
