Orange Flowers: Lunaire's Field-Tested Picks

The orange bloomers that actually earned a spot in my zone 7b clay beds — by zone, sun, bloom time, and the exact cultivar I'd plant.

The short version

For dependable orange in most U.S. gardens, the best all-rounders are butterfly weed (zones 3 to 9), Crocosmia 'Lucifer'-style coppertips (zones 5 to 9), daylilies (zones 3 to 9), and Mexican sunflower as an annual anywhere. For nonstop season-long color, marigolds and zinnias carry a bed from June to frost. Below are eleven I have actually grown or trialed on heavy clay in zone 7b, each with its zones, sun needs, bloom time, and the named cultivar I would buy. Orange draws butterflies, hummingbirds and bees, so most of these double as pollinator plants.

How we chose

Every plant here I have grown, or trialed and watched closely, on heavy clay in zone 7b with mostly full sun. I checked each one's USDA hardiness range, mature size, sun and bloom window against current horticultural sources before listing it, and where a plant is hardy only in warm zones I have said so plainly rather than pretending it overwinters everywhere. When I name a cultivar, it is the one that held its color and form in my hands — not just the prettiest catalog photo. If something sulked its first year or needed coddling, I said that too.

1. Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa)

Zones 3–9 · Full sun · Early-to-mid summer bloom · 1–2.5 ft. This native milkweed is the orange I would plant first. Flat clusters of true orange sit over wiry stems, monarchs lay eggs on it, and once its deep taproot is down it shrugs off drought and my clay. The honest catch: it has a taproot that resents being moved and it is famously slow and late to emerge in spring — do not give up on it in May. The straight species is hard to beat, but 'Hello Yellow' offers a gold form if you want range.

2. Crocosmia (Crocosmia 'Lucifer')

Zones 5–9 · Full sun · Mid-to-late summer bloom · 2–4 ft. Crocosmia throws arching wands of flame-colored blooms over sword-like foliage, and hummingbirds work it all July. 'Lucifer' is the toughest and most cold-hardy of the lot — fiery scarlet-orange and hardy down to zone 5, where most coppertips stop at 6. Plant the corms in spring in well-drained ground; in my clay I work in grit so they do not rot, and they clump up generously over a few years.
