Evergreen Shrubs: Lunaire's Field-Tested Picks

Twelve evergreen shrubs I've grown in zone 7b clay — the foundation plants, hedges, and shade-fillers that actually hold their leaves and their shape.

The short version

The most dependable evergreen shrubs for year-round structure are 'Green Velvet' boxwood and inkberry holly for tidy formal shapes, 'Otto Luyken' cherry laurel and 'Soft Touch' holly for low broadleaf masses, and camellia, pieris, or rhododendron when you want evergreen leaves plus flowers. For shade, lean on yew and inkberry; for sun, boxwood and juniper. Most settle into zones 5–9, with camellias wanting zone 7 and warmer. Match leaf texture and mature size to the job before you fall for the flowers.

How we chose

Every shrub here has grown in my zone 7b beds, most in the clay I've spent years opening up with compost and grit. I judged each on whether it truly holds its leaves through a hard winter, whether it keeps a decent shape without constant shearing, and whether it earns its space rather than just filling it. Where a plant is fussy about drainage, pH, or sun, I say so. Zones and mature sizes below are verified ranges, tightened by what I've actually seen these do in the ground.

1. 'Green Velvet' Boxwood (Buxus 'Green Velvet')

Zones 4–9 · Full sun to part shade · 3–4 ft tall and wide. The boxwood I plant for a naturally rounded, dense globe that needs almost no shaping — far more cold-hardy than English box and a good bronze-resistant performer. It holds its color through my winters without the orange burn cheaper boxwood gets. The one thing I watch for is boxwood blight; I keep airflow open, avoid overhead watering, and never shear when the foliage is wet. For low formal edging or a foundation row, nothing beats it.

2. Inkberry Holly (Ilex glabra 'Shamrock')

Zones 5–9 · Full sun to part shade · 3–5 ft tall and wide. A native broadleaf holly with small smooth leaves that reads like a looser boxwood — and crucially, it tolerates the wet, low-lying spots that rot box and juniper. I use 'Shamrock' for a fuller, less leggy habit than the straight species, which tends to go bare at the knees with age. It's my go-to for that boggy shaded corner every yard seems to have. Native, deer-resistant, and quietly tough.
