True blue is the rarest pigment in the plant world. Many of the 'blue' flowers in nursery catalogs are actually purple or blue-violet; the photographs are aggressively color-corrected. This list is the real blues — plants whose flowers genuinely read as blue in real garden conditions, without the help of Photoshop or filtered light.

Every plant here has bloomed in my plot. I describe what color you actually get — and where the marketing oversells the blueness. Pair these with white or silver for the most blue-forward bed design.
1. Salvia 'Black and Blue'
Zones 7-10 (annual elsewhere), full sun, summer-fall, 3-4 ft. Deep cobalt-blue tubular flowers with black calyces — the bluest blue salvia.
2. Delphinium 'Pacific Giant'
Zones 3-7, full sun, early summer, 5-7 ft. Tall blue spires. Short-lived perennial; stake at planting.
3. Hydrangea (acid soil blue)
Zones 5-9, part shade, summer, 3-6 ft. Macrophylla types turn blue in acidic soil (pH 5.5 or below). Aluminum sulfate amendment maintains blue.
4. Forget-Me-Not (Myosotis sylvatica)
Zones 3-8, part shade, late spring, 6-12 in. The genuine sky-blue tiny flowers. Biennial — self-sows.
5. Plumbago (Plumbago auriculata)
Zones 9-11, full sun, summer-fall, 4-10 ft sprawl. Pale ice-blue flowers; tropical shrub treated as annual in cold zones.
6. Bachelor's Button (Centaurea cyanus)
Annual, full sun, summer, 1-3 ft. Cottage-garden true blue. Direct-sow in early spring; self-sows.
7. Morning Glory 'Heavenly Blue'
Annual climbing, full sun, summer, 8-12 ft. Sky-blue trumpets that open at dawn, close by afternoon.
8. Brunnera 'Jack Frost'
Zones 3-8, part to full shade, spring, 12-18 in. Tiny forget-me-not-blue flowers over silver-veined heart leaves.
9. Anchusa azurea 'Loddon Royalist'
Zones 3-8, full sun, early summer, 3-5 ft. Deep gentian-blue clusters. Short-lived perennial; cut back hard after bloom.
For a blue-forward bed, layer Salvia 'Black and Blue' (back, 4 ft), delphinium (mid, 5 ft) where hardy or substituting with anchusa, and brunnera (front, shade edge). Add white for contrast — phlox 'David' or astilbe 'Deutschland'.
