Are Spider Plants Toxic to Cats
The short answer is no — but the long answer untangles a stubborn internet myth and explains why your cat keeps gnawing the leaves anyway.
Spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum) are listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. They contain no compounds known to poison cats. A cat that eats a lot of leaf can still vomit or get loose stool — that is plain fiber irritating an empty stomach, not toxicity. The widely repeated claim that spider plants are "mildly hallucinogenic" to cats is folklore with no scientific backing; cats are drawn to the dangling, grass-like leaves the way they're drawn to any swaying green thing. I keep one in a window the cat can reach and have never had a problem worse than a chewed leaf tip.
