Topsoil
What topsoil actually is, how it differs from compost and fill dirt, and exactly how much you need for beds, lawns, and raised beds.
Topsoil is the dark, biologically active upper layer of soil, roughly the top few inches of the earth, made of sand, silt, and clay mixed with organic matter, microbes, and nutrients. It is the medium plant roots actually grow in, which is what separates it from fill dirt (subsoil used for grading) and from compost (decomposed organic matter you blend in for fertility). For most planting work I mix screened topsoil with compost rather than using either alone, and for a new lawn I lay 4 to 6 inches of it. One cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, which is the number I keep coming back to when I am ordering by the truckload.
