Mulching: Which Mulch, How Deep, and the Mistakes to Avoid
A practical, depth-by-depth guide to choosing the right mulch, spreading it correctly, and dodging the volcano mistake that quietly kills trees.
For most beds, spread organic mulch 2 to 4 inches deep: lean toward 2 inches for fine materials like grass clippings or compost, and up to 4 inches for coarse wood chips and bark. Vegetable beds want a thinner 1 to 2 inches so the soil can still warm; trees and shrubs want a wide 3 to 4 inch ring on well-drained sites, dropping to 2 to 3 inches on heavy clay. The single most damaging mistake is the mulch volcano, piling mulch against the trunk, which rots bark and suffocates roots. Keep mulch 3 to 6 inches clear of trunks and 2 to 3 inches clear of shrub stems so the root flare stays visible. Refresh organic mulch once a year and keep it 6 inches off your home's foundation.
