What each nutrient actually does
Nitrogen is the engine of leafy, vegetative growth. It is the backbone of chlorophyll, the pigment that makes leaves green and runs photosynthesis, and it is a building block of the proteins inside every plant cell. When a plant has plenty of nitrogen it pushes out new stems, fills in with deep green foliage, and grows fast. This is exactly what you want from a lawn, from lettuce, from spinach, and from any plant you are growing for its leaves. It is also why too much nitrogen on a tomato gives you a six foot jungle of foliage and almost no fruit.
Phosphorus works underground and at the flowering stage. It drives root development, helps a young transplant establish, and supports the plant as it sets buds, flowers, and fruit. It plays a central role in how the plant moves and stores energy from sunlight. A phosphorus shortage shows up as stunted, sluggish growth and sometimes a purplish cast on older leaves. This is the nutrient you lean on when you want blooms and a harvest rather than just green mass, which is why bloom-boosting formulas put the middle number highest.
Potassium is the plant's regulator and quartermaster. It governs the opening and closing of stomata, the microscopic pores on leaves that control water loss and gas exchange, so a plant with enough potassium handles drought and heat far better than one without. It supports carbohydrate production, stiffens stems, and measurably improves disease resistance and overall vigor. You rarely grow a plant specifically for potassium the way you do for nitrogen or phosphorus, but a deficiency leaves everything weaker, floppier, and more prone to problems.
Beyond these big three, plants need secondary nutrients like calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, plus a handful of micronutrients such as iron, manganese, and zinc in trace amounts. A good compost program and decent soil usually supply these without any thought. When they run short you see specific symptoms, like the blossom-end rot on tomatoes that traces back to calcium, or the yellowing between leaf veins that points to iron or magnesium. Chasing these before you have confirmed the deficiency is a common way to waste money and stress plants.
Nitrogen feeds the leaves, phosphorus feeds the roots and flowers, potassium keeps the whole plant tough. Match the number to the job and you have most of fertilizing figured out.
